Crews Extinguish Multi-Vehicle fire at RPM Recycling

- Fire crews were able to contain a multi-vehicle fire this afternoon at RPM Recycling in Plainfield Township.Township Fire Chief Ryan Pool said his department was called at 1:21 p.m. to the scrap yard off Route 512 near the Wind Gap border. They found four vehicles set to be ground up in a metal chipper were engulfed in flames in the business' recycling yard, Pool said.It took firefighters about 15 to 20 minutes to contain the fire. No injuries were reported. "The fire was pretty well contained to one area," Pool said.Nolan Perin, owner of RPM Recycling, said the fire started when an employee moved a car to be shredded in the metal chipper. The gas tank had not been removed, and a spark apparently formed and lit the tank on fire. The fire spread to three other vehicles in the vicinity, Perin said.Employees attempted to contain the fire with a fire extinguisher, but it soon grew too large and firefighters were called in, he said.Customers of RPM Recycling are instructed to remove the gas tanks from vehicles before they drop them off, but the customer who submitted the car failed to do so, Perin said.Pool said there will not be an investigation because there was no value lost.Plainfield Township officials last week discussed a cease and desist order to RPM Recycling based on allegations the company is improperly storing "fluff," a potentially hazardous material. Auto fluff is the material left over after junk cars have been stripped of metal and other valuable components, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency website.RPM Recycling has filed an appeal of the cease and desist order, Perin said. A zoning hearing is scheduled for May 29 to decide the matter.Joyce Lambert, the interim zoning officer for Plainfield Township, declined comment on whether today's fire at the company could be factored into testimony in the township's defense. ...

Plainfield Twp. Vol. Fire Co. responds to mobile meth lab situation

Article Courtesy of The Express-Times - A traffic stop Sunday night in Plainfield Township turned up a mobileethamphetamine lab, prompting a two-county hazardous-materials response and the decontamination of two police officers, authorities say.The driver of the car, Jeffrey John Konopaski II, 31, of Plainfield Township, was taken to Northampton County Prison on outstanding drug warrants, township police Chief Dean Ceraul said.Konopaski's bail was set at 10 percent of $25,00, which he had not posted as of this afternoon. The other two men, one 28 and the other 46 and both from the Slate Belt, were later released, Ceraul said. All three will face charges related to the meth lab, he said.Police declined to release the names of the two other suspects, citing an ongoing investigation.Ceraul and investigating officer Scott Zabriskie provided an account of the traffic stop:Zabriskie and Michael Buchanan were on patrol when they saw a car about 8:13 p.m. in the 1600 block of Delabole Road driven by a man they knew didn't have a driver's license. When the officers ran the car's license plate, they discovered the owner, Konopaski, had a warrant out for "dangerous drugs": Konopaski was wanted on charges of possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, according to court records. After the car was pulled over, the officers noticed a man in the back seat trying to conceal something. It turned out to be the equipment and chemicals to make methamphetamine. The officers initially picked up some of the equipment before they realized it was dangerous. They immediately stepped away from the vehicle and were later decontaminated by Pennsylvania State Police laboratory personnel from the Bethlehem barracks. "It was a great vehicle stop. Thankfully no one was hurt," Ceraul said. "It was just good police work."The investigation is continuing, Ceraul said. It is unclear if drugs were found in addition to the equipment and chemicals, he said. It is also unclear if the vehicle was being used to make the drugs or just transport the equipment and supplies, he said.Zabriskie said he thinks Sunday's incident is Plainfield Township's first involving a mobile meth lab. However, the drug is present in the community, he said. "It's definitely here in the area," Zabriskie said.Wind Gap police assisted on the traffic stop and hazardous materials personnel from Lehigh County and emergency management personnel from Northampton County assisted at the scene, Ceraul said....

Jim Dietrich from Brown-Daub Wind Gap brought over a 2012 Chevy Volt for the Slate Belt's emergency responders to take a look at.Jim Dietrich and Jason Kornhausl an ASE Certified Volt Technician gave an overview of where all the electrical components are located and where to cut and where not to cut if the emergency responders ever encounter a Chevy Volt in an automobile accident. The intent of the training session is to provide information to help
responders understand the emergency situations involving Chevrolet Volt
vehicles in the safest manner possible. The training session also contains a general description of how the
Chevrolet Volt vehicle systems operate, identifies the location of the
unique badging, and included illustrations of the unique components. The
training session also described methods of disabling the high voltage
system and identified cut zone information. The Chevrolet Volt is a
front-wheel drive, four-passenger electric vehicle with extended-range
capability. The vehicle is propelled exclusively by electric motors. The
Volt uses high voltage energy that is stored in the high voltage
battery as its primary power source. However, once the battery capacity
is reduced, the gasoline engine drives a generator which produces
electricity to power the vehicle. We would like to "THANK" Brown-Daub Wind Gap for the training session and Wind Gap Fire Company, Lookout Fire Company, and Washington Twp. Vol. Fire Co. for attending the training session. **Photo's courtesy of Brown Daub Wind Gap's facebook page**...
