Firefighters were true professionals

The value of our volunteer fire department was confirmed to me at 3 a.m. Aug. 8, 2011.

I had a fire at my farmhouse on Route 191 in Plainfield Township. Thanks to the men and women who represent the Plainfield Township and Washington Township volunteers for fighting the fire and also Upper Nazareth and Lower Mount Bethel for being there on standby with their tankers I was spared total loss.

The response time was phenomenal, estimated at 20 minutes. And, once the volunteers arrived they began to work in a highly professional manner.

The location of the fire was immediately determined and an action plan was implemented without delay. The volunteers worked as a team and the situation was under control in no time.

Thanks to their outstanding efforts me and my tenants avoided a serious loss of property and personal treasures.

The fire department volunteers are truly professional in training and attitude. These folks are a tremendous resource to our communities.

We need to support, encourage and thank them at every opportunity. Also a huge thank you to the Red Cross for coming out and checking to see if there was anything they could do for me or my tenants. They are truly a dedicated and very helpful.

PLAINFIELD TWP. VOL. FIRE CO. FIGHTS PLASTIC INDUSTRIAL FIRE

Tuesday, August 2, 2011  We the officers, firefighters, EMS and support (social) members of the Plainfield Township Volunteer Fire Co. want to extend our warmest and most sincere thanks to our brothers and sisters in the fire and EMS service that assisted us this past week at the Nico's Polymer fire on Bangor Rd.  The call for help went out to several surrounding counties in Pennsylvania and NJ and you all answered our call in tremendous fashion!  The support that we received was fantastic and we'll never be able to thank all of you enough!

We would also like to thank all the local businesses, restaurants and individual residents that took the time and money to donate food and drinks to the personnel on the fire ground.  Because of the amount of time spent on scene as well as the heat and humidity we wouldn't have lasted without those donations.  Thank you!

North Penn Good Will and the Red Cross also did a wonderful job of providing relief and food to those on scene.  Thank you!

We'd like to extend our thanks to our Northampton County 911 Center and Emergency Management staff, you all did a great job assisting our officers in coordinating incoming equipment and personnel as well as making sure there was coverage in areas that had moved equipment and personnel to the fire ground.  Your efforts are very much appreciated!

Finally, thanks to the man upstairs for watching over all of us as we were able to move all this equipment and personnel, fight this fire and no one was seriously hurt.  A job well done by all.  Thanks again!

George Biggs

President / Captain

PLAINFIELD ASSISTS NAZARETH WITH STRUCTURE/DWELLING FIRE

Monday, July 11, 2011  Nazareth Fire Chief Dan Keenhold said he had to pull his firefighters out of a burning home at 135 N. New St. after about 20 minutes.   "It was out of control," he said this afternoon, standing near the smoldering ash of the cottage home's garage.

It took more than 100 firefighters and 10 fire companies about two and a half hours to extinguish the fast-moving fire that destroyed the Nazareth home.  Authorities said the homeowner, Charles Weisenberger, put a recently used lawnmower into his garage about 3 p.m.

The lawnmower soon set ablaze the garage adjacent to the home and the flames spread to a pickup truck, fire officials said. The pickup then exploded - engulfing the north side of the home.   "I heard three explosions," said Linda Drew, who lives on North Elm Street, one block over from the site of the fire. "I looked out the window and saw pure, black smoke."

A makeshift camp was set up across the street on the lawn of 132 N. New St., where emergency medical service workers checked firefighters with stethoscopes and handed them bottled water.  Firefighters, feeling the effects of 90-degree heat and a raging fire, dumped bottles of water on their heads. Two firefighters even submerged their faces in pooling water on the street coming from a Hecktown Volunteer Fire Co. truck.

"Flames were shooting out the back, out the front," said Nazareth First Fire Chief John Deutsch, who estimated the temperature inside the home was more than 200 degrees.

A crowd of about 40 onlookers was rushed from the scene at 3:55 p.m. as thick black smoke from the home moved like fog through the street, causing eyes to water and nostrils to burn.  The garage had burned to the ground by 4:15 p.m., but firefighters blasted water and smashed in the roof of the home with axes for more than an hour.

At 5:46 p.m., the fire was declared out.  Weisenberger laid on the grass of 132 N. New St. as the fire was declared out, his brown shirt covered in sweat. He declined to comment.

Several firefighters and police officers expressed relief the fire had not spread.  "Let's put it this way: If Nazareth (Fire Department) did not respond so quickly, the house next door" would have been set on fire, Nazareth police officer Dan Troxell said.

The flames caused white paint to bubble on the roof of a neighboring home.

No serious injuries were reported, but several firefighters were suffering from heat exhaustion, Nazareth police said.

Plainfield Twp. Officials Investigate Cause of Fire at Vacant Home

Tuesday, May 10, 2011  Police and fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire Monday night at a vacant home on Sanders Road in Plainfield Township.

Officer Brian Roddick said a 911 call came in about 6:30 p.m. from the 100 block of Sanders Road with a report that an 11-year-old boy had suffered burns to his face, hands and arms. It was unknown how he got the injuries.

A short time later, officials learned smoke was coming from a house on the same block. They arrived to find a fire in the basement of an unoccupied house at 116 Sanders Road. Officials extinguished the fire within about 15 minutes, and no one else was injured. Roddick said the fire did not spread from the basement, and the damage was mostly from smoke and heat.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, although an investigation continues. Roddick said the connection between the burned child and the fire is still unclear.
